How Does a GPS Tracker Work? Simple Explanation

GPS satellites, the GSM network and the tracking server — a simple explanation of how a vehicle GPS tracker finds and reports your car’s location.

A vehicle GPS tracker does three jobs: it finds its position, it sends that position to a server, and the server shows it to you. Here is how each part works.

1. Finding the position with GPS

Around 30 GPS satellites orbit the earth, each constantly broadcasting its time and position. The tracker’s GPS receiver listens to at least four satellites and, from the tiny differences in signal travel time, calculates its latitude, longitude, altitude and speed. Modern receivers also use other satellite systems such as GLONASS and BeiDou for better accuracy.

2. Sending data over the mobile network

The tracker has a SIM card. Every 10 seconds while the vehicle is moving, it packs the position, speed, ignition status, battery voltage and alarm data into a small message and sends it over the GSM/LTE network to the tracking server. If there is no signal, it stores the data and sends it later.

3. The tracking server and app

The GVSS server receives the data, saves it and checks it against your rules: Is the car outside its geofence? Is it overspeeding? Was the ignition switched on at night? If yes, it sends an alert to your app, by SMS or on WhatsApp. The V-Secure app shows the live location on Google Maps and lets you replay history.

4. Sending commands back

Communication works both ways. When you press “engine cut”, the server sends a command to the tracker, which switches a relay in the vehicle’s starter or fuel circuit so the engine cannot run.

Why installation matters

The best device fails if it is badly installed. A trained technician hides the tracker, connects it to constant power and ignition, and positions the antenna for good reception — which is why GVSS includes professional installation with every GPS tracker.
